Travelers flying through Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) should prepare for significant terminal reassignments designed to improve efficiency and enhance passenger comfort. These updates, implemented by the New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC), promise long-term benefits, although some adjustments may be required in the short term.

Terminal Reassignments

The NNIC has introduced a new structure for terminal operations. Terminal 1 will now exclusively handle Philippine Airlines (PAL) international flights, while Terminal 2 is designated for domestic flights, primarily for Cebu Pacific and PAL. Terminal 3 will accommodate all foreign airlines, as well as the international flights of Cebu Pacific and AirAsia Philippines.

Terminal 4 is reserved for domestic flights operated by AirAsia Philippines. These changes are being rolled out gradually, with the initial transitions planned before the end of 2024 to minimize disruption during the busy holiday season.

Recommendations for Passengers

Travelers are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their scheduled flights, especially as Terminal 2 will experience increased passenger volume starting November 5, 2024. Utilizing online check-in services is another practical way to save time and streamline the boarding process. These adjustments can help mitigate potential delays as passengers adapt to the new terminal arrangements.

Upgrades and Improvements

The NNIC has announced plans to enhance facilities across all terminals. This includes upgrading restrooms, adding more seating, and improving internet connectivity. Retail and dining options will also be expanded to cater to the needs of passengers. Transport links are set to improve by constructing a new off-ramp connecting the NAIA Expressway to Terminal 3.

Over the long term, these efforts aim to increase NAIA’s passenger capacity from 35 million to 62 million annually and boost aircraft movements from 41 to 48 per hour. A new terminal near Terminal 2 is also under consideration to accommodate growing demand.

During my summer vacations from teaching, I loved to jet off on an exciting adventure whenever I could. But the flights stressed me and my friends out so much that we almost stopped vacationing altogether. Would another form of transportation be easier?
